Getting back to yoga after a few months off. It is wonderful! Not only do I get 90 minutes to myself, but I get meditation, breathing, and physical stretching and toning too. But really, it’s the only time of day that I spend not thinking of “stuff”. Just thinking about your breath and your body is heaven. And when you do that, let all the other stuff go for awhile, the other stuff just isn’t that important anymore. And what’s more, it tends to almost take care of itself.

Being in the practice of focusing on my body has helped me to be more present in everyday life. Sitting at a coffee shop instead of thinking about what needs to be done, I think about what I am seeing, what I am hearing, what I am smelling, what I feel my body touching. It makes being present easy. Something I would like to teach my kids about.

There has been a lot of media attention about bullying lately. Several talk shows just last week talked about this topic due to a recent suicide of a teen that was bullied. This subject is highly charged in the schools as well.

But I think the “b” word is being thrown around without people even really thinking about it or knowing what they are talking about. From my understanding, a bully is someone who either physically or verbally continues to hurt someone even after they’ve been asked to stop. Usually they pick on someone who is shy, won’t stand up to them, and is smaller or weaker than them. This is just my definition. And I’ve seen kids like this who feed on the insecurities of the weak. It is wrong and not only should those kids have consequences, but the victims need to be counseled as well as the bystanders. I think everyone agrees so far.

Lately it seems that any time an incident happens between two children, it is called bullying. Yesterday a boy was swinging around a sticky hand toy and accidentally hit one of his friends in the back. It was an accident, the boy yelled at him for doing it and ran to tell his mother who came over and told the boy to apologize. She then told the boy that bullying is not allowed at school. Luckily, this boy knows what bullying is so he told her he isn’t a bully. Although in my mind, I wonder if a mother standing over a 9 year old yelling at him would not be considered bullying?

When I came home and did some poking around on the internet about bullying, I found out that the parents of victims are encouraged to not step in and protect their children. The kids are supposed to learn to defend themselves and not be made to feel more powerless by someone else taking over for them. So I wonder why this mom jumped to use the “b” word? Is this a problem they had before? Isn’t it harmful to your child to make them feel that something bad has happened to them and they are a victim instead of just addressing the incident at hand and letting the kids make up and move on.

I have been thinking about how everyone says that bullying has become “an epidemic” since we were kids, but in reality, I see hardly any bullying at all at my kid’s school compared to what I saw when we were kids. There are plenty of fat kids, kids with glasses, ugly kids, different colored kids, special ed kids, and every other kind of kid at my children’s school, but seriously, I never hear anyone making fun of them or picking on them at all. So why all the attention to bullying? Are we just raising kids to be super duper sensitive? Is all this talk about feelings making our kids into victims and thus encouraging the very behavior we aim to avoid?

My kids went to a family day care from the ages of 2-4. The day care was run by a 40 something mother whose children were grown. The ages of the kids were 0-5 and there were told to be nice to each other. They had time outs if they were not nice, but the one whose feelings were hurt didn’t get coddled or specially treated. The “victim” was apologized to and told to “get over it” or “let it go” or “move on, it’s over now”. Pretty much the way I was raiser…to take responsibility for myself.

When they were 4, they attended preschool, where the kids are encouraged to really express themselves. They talk a lot about feelings and when someone has been wronged, they say, “How do you think he feels about what you said to him? Doesn’t he look sad?” and to the “victim”, they say, “Tell him how that makes you feel. Tell him that hurts your feelings.” I think it’s great that they encourage the children to express themselves, but aren’t they also saying that when someone says something not nice to you, you should feel sad? I think there are some kids who wouldn’t care if they hadn’t been told by an adult that they should care. A child doesn’t hold a grudge, doesn’t feel wronged. These are learned feelings. Learned from adults who are projecting their own grudges, hurts, and memories on to their children.

I know it’s a little far out there, but it’s something to consider before projecting to your own children. Maybe they aren’t bothered or hurt. Maybe if there were less victims, there’d be less bullies.

When I ask them why they like the show, they say they like to see the grownups “lose it”. I’m not really sure if that’s the only reason they like the show, but I am deeply touched every time when they show the families thanking Supernanny and they always say how much their lives were changed by her. She has a real down to earth feel about her and she’s all about honesty and getting back to fun and family values. She let’s people know that their priority is their family and gives them their power back so they feel they are in charge. It’s remarkable what she has done for so many families who thought they would never have peace and love back in their lives.

The best part of all is when she says, “I’m on my way!”

I recently remembered a show I saw on Oprah last year about the “Blue Zones” which are 5 areas in the world that have more people over 100 years old than any other areas. One of the reasons these people say they live so long is their connection to community and nature.

This summer our family took a vacation to the Trinity Alps (where the top photograph was taken). We slept together in a cabin, spent most of every day swimming in the river, took showers outside in the woods, and ate outside every night. There was no TV, minimal internet, no cell phone. It was heavenly. Of course every vacation is heavenly, but these vacations (we go every year) are ultimate because of how very simple they are.

One of the reasons centurians said they lived so long was because they felt a purpose to their life. When I think of people who live long and joyful lives, I don’t think of the ultra successful billionaire living in a mansion with maids and a butler, I think of a simple, hard working farmer who still gets up and plows the field or milks the cow. It makes me realize that all the “stuff” in our world is not only fairly useless, but actually could be detrimental to our health. I’m going to explore that more…

Here is a clip from the show: http://www.oprah.com/article/oprahradio/moz/20080527_oaf_moz_lessonslivinglonger

Dan shares the core practices of people who live the longest:

Move naturally. Think about walking, gardening and playing with your kids to ensure daily activity. “Set up your environment so you are always bumping into the opportunity to move [around],” Dan says.

Focus on having the right outlook. Know your sense of purpose, and schedule in times when you can downshift.

Forget diets. Diets rarely work after six months, Dan says. Instead, he says the key to staying slim and living longer is eating wisely. He recommends a plant-based diet that minimizes (not eliminates) meat, eating fewer calories and consuming a glass or two of wine per day.

Connect the right way. Investing in your family is huge, Dan says. “In all Blue Zones in the world, people put their loved ones first, and we think that is associated with more good years of life.”

Reconnect with religion. People who go to church live two to three years longer than people who don’t, Dan says.

Create your own culture of longevity. Pick out friends who have healthy lifestyles and put more energy into those friendships.

Hubby and I attended Back to School Night tonight. We visited both our children’s classrooms (first and third grade). There were about 8 out of 22 sets of parents in each class. It seemed fairly low attendance to me and I wonder why more parents aren’t involved. Do they not think their child’s school is important? Is it just a place you have to go for 12 years until you begin to really live your life? Do they not realize that to a child school and family are the two things that are most important to them? And to have a community at school and feel that you really belong there is a very special thing that not all children get to experience. In both of our kid’s classes, there were letters on every desk, written by the kids to us, their parents, welcoming us and telling us how much they liked their class. It takes a lot of effort for a first or third grader to write a letter. I sit in a classroom where there are 14 letters written by happy, loving little eight year olds and there’s no parent there to read it. And I feel sad for those families because they are missing out on a beautiful period of time in their lives.

I ran into a friend tonight who was having a hard time with her Kindergartener. He has sensory issues and although the school staff is supportive, the other parents are not. I know all too well how she feels. It is so easy to be the one who is judging others, but not so easy to be the one who is judged. And not at all fair either. Who amongst us has the right to judge anyone. Having kids is so hard because you are so overwhelmed by your love for them and at the same time, they make you feel so vulnerable. When they are judged by someone, it’s an extension of yourself that feels hurt. I wish we could all be more gentle with each other, and especially with children and parents. It’s the toughest thing to do, be a parent, we can use all the support we can get and we don’t need to be judged. At some point in time, we will all be judged for something, let us try to remember how to feel compassion for one another.
