Hubby and I attended Back to School Night tonight. We visited both our children’s classrooms (first and third grade). There were about 8 out of 22 sets of parents in each class. It seemed fairly low attendance to me and I wonder why more parents aren’t involved. Do they not think their child’s school is important? Is it just a place you have to go for 12 years until you begin to really live your life? Do they not realize that to a child school and family are the two things that are most important to them? And to have a community at school and feel that you really belong there is a very special thing that not all children get to experience. In both of our kid’s classes, there were letters on every desk, written by the kids to us, their parents, welcoming us and telling us how much they liked their class. It takes a lot of effort for a first or third grader to write a letter. I sit in a classroom where there are 14 letters written by happy, loving little eight year olds and there’s no parent there to read it. And I feel sad for those families because they are missing out on a beautiful period of time in their lives.
